In a Travel Risk Academy article, I dive deeper into why traditional Travel Risk Management (TRM) platforms often fail not because the underlying risk intelligence is flawed, but because the software is too clunky for travelers and safety managers to use effectively. Prioritising user experience (UX) transforms travel safety tools from ignored compliance software into active, life-saving habits. Some of the key points raised are:

  • Understanding the users ... We often see risk solutions that provide a whole menu of features and data points. But do they actually provide what the user needs and fulfil their objectives elegantly? Without really understanding who the user is, understanding their objectives is going to be an uphill struggle.

  • The Friction Problem ... If a travel risk app or portal is difficult to navigate, travellers will bypass it, leaving organisations blind to employee locations and unable to fulfill their Duty of Care.

  • Engagement Drives Safety ... Good UX has a direct influence on adoption. Well thought out features like one-touch SOS buttons, intuitive interfaces and seamless integration with existing tools (like calendar or booking platforms) ensure travellers actually engage during a crisis.

  • Flowing end-to-end risk ... When a vendor provides a solution that understands the complete risk lifecycle, where it sits within it (or all of it) and for whom it servers, you are on the path to a much greater overall user experience.

  • Overcoming Alert Fatigue ... Effective UX isn't just about pretty visual design, it’s about context. Delivering highly relevant, location-specific notifications prevents travelers from tuning out real threats due to information overload.

  • Mobile-First Mindset ... Travellers in high-stress or dynamic environments may rely entirely on their smartphone. Risk technology must be optimised for offline access, low bandwidth and fast, single-hand interaction.

  • Shifting Perception from Surveillance to Support ... When risk tech is designed thoughtfully, employees view location tracking and safety check-ins as a protective safety net rather than corporate tracking.
